Find a Doctor: Next-Gen

Finding the right doctor is one of the most important and often most daunting steps in a patient’s care journey. How might we create a search that feels effortless while building a scalable platform for the future?

As part of our CMS migration from CommonSpot to Contentful, we seized the opportunity to redesign Sharp’s custom Find a Doctor tool. The goal was to create a more intuitive, accessible, and efficient experience for patients while modernizing the technology stack to support future innovation.

Launched on August 14, 2023, the redesigned tool is powered by Algolia search and introduces dynamic features like care partner relationships between doctors and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), helping patients make more informed decisions when choosing care.

Defining The Problem

Redesigning the Find a Doctor tool wasn’t just about refreshing the interface — it meant untangling years of technical debt, content inconsistencies, and user pain points. Along the way, we had to address:

  • An outdated interface that was difficult to navigate

  • The legacy tool was built on outdated, buggy technology that made updates and maintenance cumbersome

  • Fragmented codebases, with search and scheduling flows built in different languages and libraries, which created inconsistencies and limited scalability

  • Limited filtering and sorting options that made it harder for patients to find the right provider

  • Disconnected provider profiles with inconsistent content and design

  • No clear visibility into relationships between APPs and supervising physicians

The Process

We applied a user-first, data-driven approach that allowed us to balance patient needs with technical modernization:

  • Partnered with our data analysts to evaluate usage patterns and performance data from the legacy site, ensuring redesign decisions were grounded in real user behavior and content priorities

  • Collaborated with content strategists, developers, and clinical stakeholders to ensure accuracy and compliance, while mapping clear rules to guide content migration from the legacy site

  • Built the experience with component-driven design aligned with our unified design system for scalability and consistency

  • Implemented hybrid templates—half hard coded for the search experience but still editable within the CMS—so content editors could make real-time updates without developer intervention

  • Performed extensive validation testing, ensuring legacy content correctly mapped to the new component structure, data displayed accurately, and performance remained reliable across devices and browsers

  • Ran iterative usability testing to refine search, filtering, and profile layouts for clarity and ease of use

Behind the Build: What I Learned

Leading this work challenged me to grow as a designer and strategist while building a deeper technical toolkit. Some of the most valuable lessons came from:

💡  Mapping a full-scale site migration
Learned how to strategically plan and phase a complex migration to ensure content integrity, minimize downtime, and coordinate across multiple teams.

💡  Building and maintaining a headless CMS
Gained hands-on experience with Contentful, from modeling content types and workflows to integrating with custom front-end frameworks.

💡  Aligning stakeholders on content migration strategies
Developed processes to bring content owners, developers, and leadership into alignment, creating clear priorities and timelines that reduced friction during migration.

💡  Implementing our new design system for the first time

This was the first project to fully leverage our new component library, requiring careful planning to ensure consistent patterns while identifying gaps and opportunities for system evolution.

💡  Algolia search integration
Built an understanding of how to leverage Algolia for real-time search indexing, query optimization, and result accuracy.

💡  Filter and sort best practices
Learned to balance technical feasibility, business needs, and user expectations to design filters and sorting logic that deliver clarity and speed for patients.
